How do I find a NDIS support worker that’s right for me?

As a local care provider in Gladstone, we know that the relationship you have with your support worker is incredibly important. A good fit truly matters. You want someone who not only helps you with everyday tasks, but makes you feel safe and empowered. Our disability care team shares some eight simple questions to ask, to help you decide if a support worker is right for you.

Can they meet my needs?

It sounds simple, but start with having a good understanding of what your NDIS goals are, what needs you have, and how you’d like to be supported. This will help you know what you want from a support worker, and find one who is a good fit for you.

Are they a good communicator?

Your support worker should listen actively to your needs, ask questions, take an interest in your opinion, and be clear when they communicate to. They should be able to explain things clearly to you, so you are always on the same page.

Are they kind?

An understanding attitude can go a long way, so look for a support worker who shows great empathy and kindness. Someone who genuinely cares about your wellbeing will go the extra mile to make sure that you feel supported and valued.

Do they respect you?

While support workers are there to assist you, it’s important to find someone who supports your independence, and helps you develop life skills. The right support worker will be your cheerleader and help you achieve your goals, rather than doing everything for you.

Can they be reasonably flexible?

Life can be unpredictable. A good support worker can work with your schedule, providing their services at a time that suits you both. They should also be able to adjust their approach if your needs change over time, setting the stage for a long-term partnership

Are they reliable?

It’s important to trust your support team. A great support worker shows up on time, consistently provides the services you agree on, and as much as possible, lets you know ahead of time if there are any changes to their schedule.

Do they have a positive attitude?

Being positive isn’t about being happy all the time, but having a genuine ‘can do’ attitude to life. Look for a support worker who approaches their work with enthusiasm and a smile. A genuinely positive attitude is not only inspiring, creates a great partnership.

Trust your instincts

Finally, take notice of how you feel when you first meet a social worker. Your gut feeling is a powerful guide. Do you feel at ease and comfortable? Does it feel like a good fit? Do you see yourself getting along with them? Ask questions and get a feel of their approach to home care.
